CONCERT: LET NOT YOUR HEART BE TROUBLED - St Magnus Cathedral, Orkney Science Festival 6.09.26

A rich mix of music to mark the 30th anniversary of the death of Hans Kosterlitz, Professor of Pharmacology at the University of Aberdeen, discoverer of endorphins.

The programme features music by composers who left Germany and Austria in the 1930s, just as he and his wife did, and there are works by Hans Gal and Paul Hindemith; and there is also music by some who stayed, including Richard Strauss and Hans Pfitzner; and by composers associated with the University of Aberdeen – Gemma McGregor and Paul Mealor.

A new work by Gemma McGregor is premiered. Warm was composed in memory of Hans Kosterlitz through funding from The Hope Scott Trust. A second work by her, Let Not Your Heart Be Troubled, was first performed by the University of Aberdeen Chamber Choir in 2022.

The music is provided by Orkney Camerata and Orkney Chamber Choir. Narration is by Michael Mappin, the organist of St Magnus Cathedral.
